"To Hate or Not To Hate - That is The Question"
Happy Saturday - All this month, I have been watching movies from back in the day for Black History Month. However, as the end of this month draws near, I ran across a movie this morning that I hadn't seen in a while, "The Ghosts of Mississippi". In this movie, stars Whoopi Goldberg, Alec Baldwin, and James Wood. Each time I watch this, it moves me to tears for two reasons; one, the hatred that is displayed against a human being for the color of their skin, is unbelieveable. The second reason I cry, is because of the statement that Whoopi Goldberg, who played the wife of Medgar Evers, states to the media after the verdict, "I have gone the last mile Medgar." It is something about that profound statement that says to me, that no matter what you are faced with, or how you are treated, stand your ground, because in the end, truth will prevail. But another statement in that movie that stood out to me today was, "when you hate people, it only affects you, and half the time the people you are hating, don't even know it." I loved that. After this movie went off, I was moved with sadness, because unfortunately, we have taken the ignorance of hate that was displayed in the 60's, to the point people were killed, and turned it towards each other, but we're just using a new term now - hater. A hater is someone we describe, who have nothing good to say about us, or who we know, is trying to bring us down. The sad thing is, we know what the power of hate can do to an individual, who breeds it in their heart, as well as the ones that it is channeled at. I guess my question is, at what point do we stop it. At what point do we stop killing each other with this cancerous infection called hate, whether it's being injected by the words that we say to each other, the thoughts we have towards one another, or by flat out, terminating each other; when does it stop. When will we truly open our eyes, to see the damage that it is doing to our communities, our homes, our children and to ourselves. Have we really stopped becoming our brother's or sister's keeper. Where has the love gone. And worst yet, what have we truly learned in this Black History month - are we really making a change, or are we allowing history to repeat itself through our actions now. I leave you with this thought: "To Hate or Not To Hate, That is the Question"...who really holds the power to hate an individual. ....Peace....
